The brigades reserve battalion the North Nova Scotia Highlanders were ordered to cross the Spoy Canal and invest Kellen.
At dawn the NNSH waded through knee to waist deep water to occupy Kellen against minimal opposition.
The Germans had been outflanked at Cleve and the floodplain held no strategic importance. The NNSH occupied Kellen and waited, isolated as the floodwaters swirled around them.
The advance continued to Warbeyen where the NNSH linked up with the SDG.
By Feb 14, 1945 the NNSH had crossed the Alter Rhine occupying Hurendeich, the ferry crossing opposite Emmerich on the Rhine.
With the seizure of Hurendeich the 3rd CID's objectives in the first phase of Vertitable were achieved. The 3rd CID reverted to command of the 2nd Cnd. Corps.
While 3rd Div struggled to complete its tasks the British divisions were experiencing some of the heaviest fighting of the war. Veritable was turning into a bloody attritional battle which the British army could ill afford. The Germans who had flooded the Maas River, blocking Simpson's 9th Army, moved its armoured reserve the 15 Panzer Grenadier and 116 Panzer Div. against the British. The German counterattacks failed but by the night of Feb. 13 it was evident that the British-Canadian offensive had stalled. It was time for Montgomery, Crerar and the Corps commanders to think it out again. The next phase of Vertitable Operation Blockbuster was now in the planning stage.
